So, we've decided to go to Shetland.

Wikipedia gives an excellent and detailed introduction to the Islands. and there is a wealth of information at the Shetland Amenities Trust website.
Here's the outline itinerary we originally planned, although as you'll find as you read the Blog we deviated from it significantly:
Sunday: Board Northlink ferry at Aberdeen
Monday: Disembark Lerwick, Shetland
Find our way around
Visit the Visit Scotland iCentre
Do the Lerwick Museum
Checkin to hotel
Tuesday: Explore Lerwick and environs
Visit Scalloway
Wednesday: Travel to Unst via Yell, exploring as we go.
(Requires two ferry crossings each way!)
Go to Skaw beach for picnic lunch
Visit Hermaness Nature reserve
Do Old Haa Museum
Thursday: Explore north west Shetland
Friday: Go south to Hamnavoe, Burra, St Ninian's Isle, Quendale Mill
and Sumburgh Head.
Visit Sumburgh Head lighthouse and museum.
Saturday: Visit Shetland Textile Museum
Check in to ferry.
Sunday: Disembark in Aberdeen.
